Touch and hugs: what they do for the body and the couple
A hug when you get home, holding hands in front of a film: these gestures seem trivial. Researchers have measured them, though, and they play a surprising role.
Hugs against colds
In one study, more than 400 adults described the support they received and the hugs they shared for two weeks, then were exposed to a cold virus in quarantine. Those who received more hugs got sick less often or had milder symptoms. Hugs accounted for about a third of the protective effect of support.
Less stress, more bond
A lab study observed couples during a moment of warm contact: sitting close, holding hands, then a hug. Those who felt most supported by their partner had higher levels of oxytocin, the bonding hormone, and lower blood pressure. The body keeps track of the quality of the relationship.
Tenderness at the heart of intimacy
Studies with couples suggest that much of the well-being linked to intimate life comes through affection: hugs, caresses, closeness. In other words, tenderness is not a side dish: it is part of intimacy, even on evenings when a hug is all you share.
